Teja Lavrin, MSc in Microbiology, is a PhD student at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She works in the Laboratory for Extracellular Vesicle Research under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Metka Lenassi, PhD. Her PhD work focuses on studying extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from cells expressing HIV protein Nef. The study aims to gain a better understanding of Nef-mediated neurodegeneration in the central nervous system, which could provide insight into the pathogenesis of HIV-1 and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). This includes optimizing isolation protocols to enhance separation into subpopulations and performing stepwise characterizations for functional tests on neural stem cells.
Her research interests also extend beyond her PhD study and include interest in biomarker studies, ie. EVs in pancreatic cancer and research of fungal EV function (which have been historically studied in Lenassi’s lab). She also contributes to practical courses in the study programs at the Faculty of Medicine.
